It was a day in the history of my country with a dark and negative repercussions on the event that occured on this particular day.
Although now it's more than 30 years already, I still can't find much information about it. Back in high school when learning history, this incident wasn't that much mentioned.
I was born way after the incidents happened, and though Malaysian communities are still living in a 'peaceful' manner (among the different ethnicities), I myself am still unsure whether it would still remain that way in the coming future.
'Cause, there's always danger that what happened on 13th May 1969 could still occur again. (History sometimes repeats itself)
The government here had tried to curb this problem of misunderstanding since before. I think that one of the biggest effort to ensure that Malays, Chinese and Indians mix together and learn to live side by side was that the creation of the Sekolah Kebangsaan (primary and high school), a concept that had a normalized school throughout the country where the different ethnicities go and learn under the same school.
But still, I can't really see much fusion among Malaysians from before and until now, in every sense in life (education, working profesionals, business, religion, etc.)
Don't get me wrong, not that I'm saying we got real big problems here in this country. No doubt some Malaysians 'share' equally and worked together harmoniuosly. But just that in my own opinion it doesn't happen on a more than 90% scale everywhere here.
There are efforts of course, like through the government, but I think it's all bullsh-t.
See kids here, some of them (those from school especially), still hang around their own 'race' cliques. The Malays with the Malays, the Chinese with the Chinese, and the Indians with the Indians.
There's a friction where the people of this group doesn't give a damn about the others, as long as they themselves are successful and can survive and get what they want. Some politicians here are crap anyway. Keep on talking and talking.
How many of us gives a real good damn about the country anyway? If this country crumbles under serious threat (as in a war), it will probably crumble quickly (my opinion). In this view I'm pessimistic.
It's important to know who you are and what your country represents to you........and equally vital is how important you represent your country. But nonetheless, evil will always exist. And racial discrimination is, and always will, be a factor and danger at anywhere.
