"I am the proudest man in England." - Steve McClaren
Steve McClaren was appointed by the English Football Association to become the next England head coach after current man in charge Sven-Goran Eriksson will step down this summer.
What I would like to talk about is as according to the title of today's post. Life's moments can change in seconds.
You worked hard to achieve something, only for that aspiration to be dashed as the opportunity you wanted was chosen on another man. Then, with the happening of some bizarre, drastic or dramatic turn of events, that very same opportunity that you crave for comes back to you, and you got it.
Last week, the search for Eriksson's replacement intensified as the English FA decided to shortlist Brazilian and current Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari as the next coach of England.
It was a decision with 'suspects' and met with different views. The main view was that if Scolari was going to be the next coach of the England football squad, it's going to be another foreigner in charge of England.
I think some English fans would had preferred if it was an Englishman this time around. And McClaren was among those on the list of possible candidates.
Anyway, last week wasn't that good for McClaren. The news came out that supposedly Scolari was the man to be appointed, and McClaren's Middlesbrough were losing out in the UEFA Cup semifinals. McClaren was in the down.
Came this week, Scolari had rejected the England post. Probaby due to the factors of hounding of English media and some said reported death threats. With Scolari out of the picture, it look more brightly for the opportunity to be given to McClaren. He was after all, perhaps the best qualified for the job. Being Eriksson's assisstant ever since the Swede took charge of England back in 2000, and furthermore managing a Premier League side, I suppose that McClaren had the right credentials. Apart from that, his Middlesbrough side made it through the UEFA Cup final in again in an amazing fightback fashion.
I can't really judge on McClaren, don't really know how good he is, as I don't follow Middlesbrough or the English Premier League much. But at least he's English, and that's something England fans could look forward too, an identity. Besides, I'm sure that in tactical prospects, McClaren would be more cavalier than Eriksson.
Anyhow, good luck to Steve McClaren. He's now in one of the biggest hotseat in planet football. England's coach.
Good Luck.
(He'll really need it.)
