CHAPTER 201: Looking Back At UFC 88.....

“ Wow, who would have expected that? ” – Joe Rogan
“ Maybe only Rashad Evans and some of his teammates. ”
– Mike Goldberg

Dong Hyun Kim – Matt Brown

Kim dominated with grappling in the first round, and Brown fought back from the 2nd round onwards. At the end Kim tried to salvage it at the end. It was a tough decision, maybe could’ve gone either way.

My fight Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Martin Kampmann – Nate Marquadt

Marquadt was stronger in this fight, and he made a good high kick as well (which led him then cornering and pinning Kampmann against sides of the cage, which ended up with barrage of punches that ended the fight in his favor). Perhaps with this win, it would put him back on track for a contention for the UFC MW title.

My fight Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Dan Henderson – Rousimar Palhares

I believe that this fight went through as a lot of people expected, with Henderson keeping it standing and looking for that opportunity for his right hand, and on the opposite end Palhares striving for the fight to be on the ground (and getting in a slick and painful submission), with Henderson emerging victorious with a grinding decision. This fight probably sticks back the moniker of Decision Dan for Henderson. And the nickname ‘Dangerous’ should be applied to Palhares, more so regarding his ground game, as Henderson obviously did not want any part of it, and always keeping the fight as a stand up battle with getting his own strengths for this particular fight at his bay. However, I believe that Palhares did more of the two in engaging the fight, as he threw some kicks throughout the fight (but alas, to not much avail as Henderson kept his distance and circling away, top bait the Brazilian for his right hand punch of course) and there was that crunching slam in the second round.

My fight Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Tim Boetsch – Michael Patt

A quick punched from the Barbarian that dropped down Patt, followed by Boetsch’s ground and pounding. A good first round win for Boetsch.

My fight Rating: 2 ½ out of 5 stars

Rich Franklin – Matt Hamill

Franklin just the better fighter. And that was a hard kick to the liver.

My fight Rating: 3 ½ out of 5 stars

Rashad Evans – Chuck Liddell

No doubt, an upset victory.
Perspectives from Evans’ side, his fight plan came through. It was risky to trade stand up with Chuck Liddell, but Rashad’s fighting, as well as his dancing/showboating/strafing/confidence shown worked against Liddell. But that was a crunching punch and knockout that he hit against Liddell. From Liddell’s side, he was frustrated against Evans. This fight perhaps showed that Chuck is on the wane, declining down the LHW yet again after a loss, and maybe that age question is now even more crucially pinning on him at his current career situation. Rashad’s knockout definitely add to the fight rating.

My fight Rating: 3 ½ out of 5 stars

Other words…

It’s clear that from Rashad’s win that the followers perspectives will think of The Ultimate Fighter being a big winner from this event. Rashad’s win now puts him up against Forest Griffin for the title, and it further increases the aura that TUF brings to the scope (and also for the UFC in general) as it is having it’s raised products headlining a title fight an being on top of the chain.

On a negative consequential plane however, now we’ll be seeing the existing pro TUF/pro UFC followers further believe in the hype of the TUF, and more new noobs who’d believe in the hype as well.
