CHAPTER 199: Barcelona (1) - Racing Santander (1) [analysis]

Alternative Title: A Victory Lost
Negatives
  • A game expected for a needed victory ended up as a draw. Two points lost of the league table, and furthermore with the game being played at home.
  • The other big negative point is the injury of Hleb. Reports are stating that he'll be out 3-4 weeks. Considering that out of all the new signings, he was the only 'attacking' player bought in. This would hamper not only Hleb's progress at the club but also Whatever Guardiola's plans and tactics in aspect of players utilisation and rotations.
  • The inability to finish chances. Besides that, I think more chances should have been made urgently. It was one of those games where Barça kept possession for along time but there wasn't much productive gameplay in getting goals.
  • The goal conceded was poor. And after the opposition scored things became drastic and hasty, as Barcelona trying to not concede another goal.
  • I found Eto'o to be seriously underperforming in this game. Whether it was due to insufficient delivery, or the roles he played in the game being kept switching to the wings, it's not the Eto'o of the winnings seasons.
Positives
  • The two inclusions of the youngsters, Pedro and Busquets, who I believe had good games and did their possible best. More so on Busquets, who was calm, cool and made good passes. Of course, playing at Camp Nou and againts the opposition, it was good impression, but nevertheless reservations would still be made until they are able to play againts the 'bigger' boys in the 'bigger' matches. But they showed in the game (and with improvements among things) they could become important squad members in the future.
  • Slight improvement from the game compared to the game againts Numancia (more scoring chances made and attempted, and there were more utilizations from the wings). Alas,it wasn't enough/good enough. Hopefully though things will pickup in the right direction for Guardiola and the team.
