CHAPTER 182: 1 Gold Medal, 1 Million Ringgit

“ Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance
to work hard at work worth doing. ”

- Theodore Roosevelt

The government would be rewarding a cool RM 1 million to the athletes who win a gold medal in the Olympic events they compete in.
For the athletes’ side and perspective, I think it’s a great incentive and reward (and especially for our athletes as I think that the local athletes are not paid or get lucrative offers as those in the developed countries).

However, the issue that I have with this action is that why are the government only doing this several months before the Olympics begin? In my opinion, it should have been done 4 years ago, after the previous Olympics ended, so that the athletes would be further motivated and hence focus on their training with that clear ambition everyday. The other issue is that the resort to motivate (or ask, or beg) with money is disconcerting at some levels. This is the Olympics. Honor, pride, spirit and sacrifice for your country should be the more important motivation when competing. Instead, in my opinion it could lead to the athletes with a wrong conscience when they are in Beijing.
But for everybody’s sake, it all now lies with the athletes themselves. And they have a chance that can change their lives.
Let’s just hope though, that the 1 million promised is good, clean money.
