CHAPTER 12: The state and the miss-practice of the Police

“It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.” - David Brin

I saw the news at 8, and one of the segments they showed caught my attention. It involves a teenager (looks like a teenaged kid) being badly beaten up by a policeman, and the policeman got charged for his misconduct. The kid, who's from the Klang area, was supposedly stealing from some workshop and got caught. When the cops got him, he said that they interrogated him and beat the sh-t out of him. Among the ways the kid got beaten up was beaten up by the police stick (what you call that? I can't remember) and even getting electric shocks. The cop was saying to the kid something like "kau tau tak kau berdepan dengan siapa? Polis. Tak ade sape yang boleh tolong kau", and supposedly inflicted more punches to the kid. The news showed the kid at the hospital, laying on the bed helplessly, with bruises underneath his eyes, neck, a plaster on his arm, and some scratch marks on his neck.
Makes you think, how some cop could "assumedly" abuse their powers? Of course, we got to take into consideration that it's hard to determine what really went on, the cop might be guilty, but the kid himself could have really stole that stuff. To me, although he doesn't look like a gangster or a wannabe O.G., he doesn't look much like a goody-goody boy (he got the face as if he did stole it).
Any man, especially those whose profession or duties in life are to uphold the rights and justice of the world can be turned to the dark side in their actions (enter Anakin Skywalker). In this world, bad men are dangerous enough, but what is equally dangerous are policemen who become 'bad policemen'.
Maybe, ....some cops, when they want to get some things done (and the righteous things) they have to bend the rules a lil' bit (especially when gettings thing done by the book is not effective), but it's important too that the policemen would not make a different breed of policemen that would serve the community (those who go all out on their own motives and way regardless). It's dangerous to have our cops like detective Nick Chen, detective Alonzo Harris or officer Tenpenny heading the force.
I'm not sure whether the police here would get more scrutinized if any other similar cases (be it small time or big time) gets caught by the media. The disaster that is the 'squatting incident' itself was embarassing to Malaysia. Please.
The police. It's your duty to protect and like everybody, you'r representing the country.
