Paul Buentello vs. Kiril Sidellnikov
Buentello is the more experienced fighter, and in this fight he will have the height and reach advantage over his opponent.
Kiril is the younger, less experienced fighter of the two. I think in this fight the Russian would need to rely on his Sambo skills, and his trainings with Fedor and the Red Devil team. Besides that, Kiril would need to test Buentello on the ground to negate Buentello’s height advantage. Another factor for Kiril to emerge victorious is that he needs to be faster than Buentello as well.
I believe that this fight would end up in a decision, and I am picking Kiril Sildelnikov to get an upset win.
My Predicted Victor: Kiril Sidellnikov
Sokoudjou is probably the stronger, more powerful (and surely more athletic) fighter here, but also having the lesser fights and experience compared to Babalu. The bad thing with Sokoudjou is he’s on a bad streak coming from the UFC, and he’s got the tendency of gassing out as the fight progresses, and maybe also the doubt regarding his heart.
Babalu got the BJJ prowess, and more experienced.
Regarding how the fight is going to turn out, Sokoudjou probably will push the pace early on, trying to get a quick knockout, or to drop Babalu and then proceed with the ground and pounding (considering that he’s the stronger striker). But I think that Babalu would be able to withstand Sokoudjou’s strength and power, and would try to be patient and hope to catch Sokoudjou in either submission or tko opportunity.
I predict the fight will go into either two rounds or three rounds, in which the Brazilian would catch Sokoudjou with a submission as the fight progresses.
I pick Babalu winning by a Rear Naked Choke.
My Predicted Victor: Renato Sobral
Vitor Belfort vs. Matt Lindland
Besides the main event, I’m looking forward to this particular fight. The thing about this fight is that I think both Belfort and Lindland probably bring about equal strengths to counter up against each other.
Lindland’s plan would be using his wrestling against Belfort’s BJJ, and control Vitor on the ground.
Belfort on the other hand I think would use his BJJ in catching Lindland through a submission.
On the upcoming fight, this could prove to be a standup war with plenty of boxing exchanges (and the occasional leg kicks), but perhaps each round could have the clinching and ground fighting. I’m unsure on the standup war though.
What I predict is that this would be a grueling 3 round war.
I pick Vitor Belfort winning by decision.
My Predicted Victor: Vitor Belfort
This fight is for Barnett to lose out a lot should he loses (especially considering that he’s expected to be on line next to challenge Fedor if the Russian expectedly defeats Arlovski). And he’s also the better overall fighter. Should he lose, it would be a big upset.
This fight will probably be a sluggish affair.
No doubt that Yvel has to impose more on stand up should he wan to win. But Barnett would eventually get the better in getting on top of Yvel when the fight hits the ground, and I predict the American would pull out a submission.
I say Barnett wins this by armbar in the second round.
My Predicted Victor: Josh Barnett
It’s the main event, and I’m looking forward to this one the most!
Before going into how I think the fight is going to turn out, I’ll write up about Arlovski and Fedor’s elements going into the fight first.
With Andrei Arlovski, all the non-stop talk about him having the better boxing skills (and the Freddie Roach factor coming on here). One can assume that he’s fight plan will be utilizing boxing and height advantage over Fedor. For Arlovski to emerge victorius, besides the boxing element, he would need to quicker and more relentless in hitting Fedor as well as making the better movement and footwork (in getting in and out of Fedor’s range as he throws the strikes to hurt Fedor). But Arlovski has to avoid a potential major damage in terms of ground fighting, if the fight hits the ground, Fedor would be able to dictate the pace on the ground. Thus I believe that his takedown defense must be top notch to negate against one of Fedor’s strong points.
On Fedor’s points, apart from having to nullify Arlovski’s height advantage, I believe that he needs to be careful from Arlovski’s expected striking exchanges, and perhaps counter back strong. Also, he needs to bring the fight to the ground when the opportunity arises and then be the quicker fighter on capitalizing the opportunity. Besides that, from stand up perspective I also think that for Fedor to win, he has to punish Arlovski constantly once he’s able to hit the Belarusian, just like he did against Tim Sylvia.
Now moving to the fight, what I would see is that this would be boxing and stand-up exchanges a plenty. Arlovski’s probably would be pushing the fight to his rhythm and pace to counter up against whatever’s Fedor’s plan is for the fight.
But the one big factor that I’m sure a lot of people are expecting is Arlovski’s chin. I think Fedor is bound to drop Arlovski on the ground once he hits Andrei, and that’s where I think it’s prime for a submission opportunity for Fedor to pounce on.
Both fighters with their Sambo background makes this fight interesting. And am hoping it to be a great fight no matter what happens.
I say Fedor for the win, by armbar on the 3rd round of the fight.
My Predicted Victor: Fedor Emelianenko
Other Thoughts going into this fight…
With all the constant talk about Arlovski’s boxing, would this perhaps be a ploy from Arlovski’s camp to unsettle and maybe even bait Fedor? I mean it’s like non stop talking about boxing, maybe Arlovski’s is also working on other aspects for the fight secretly to off caught Fedor (besides the boxing factor, which I still think would be Arlovski’s biggest skill set going in this fight, especially considering that the last fights Arlovski’s been in it’s his striking that mattered more).
As for Fedor, this presents another opportunity to gain a victory over a former UFC HW champ (besides the obvious P4P status factor).
Another thing that I personally want to add is that I believe that Fedor will be the winner and after that we’ll finally see the long awaited Fedor-Barnett duel (yep, believing Barnett will win his fight). Fedor would probably be on a streak of meeting former UFC champions, and I think that his challenge is rising harder. He was supposedly in a tough fight against Tim Sylvia, and now in another difficult fight against an in form Arlovski, and once he gets through Arlovski I think he’ll probably be in his toughest fight yet since CroCop when he meets Barnett.
Nevertheless at this current point of time, let’s see how Affliction is going to hold up with their second show. Looking forward to great fights!! I certainly can’t wait for it!
