CHAPTER 248: Reviewing K-1 Dynamite Fields 2008

" Live to fight not fight to Live. " - Royce Gracie

Bobb Sapp vs “Mantaro” Tanako
Well,… Tanako I think did well to survive against Sapp…..before Sapp eventually overpowered him.
The Japanese even had like side control over Bob Sapp at some moment of the fight and he did his best in pounding away on Sapp’s head. But the moment Sapp was able to fully hit Tanako, the ensuing strikes that came was just inevitable before he overpowered the Japanese as written earlier.
Nice dance from Sapp after the fight ended, haha.

Mighty Mo vs Semmy Schilt
A quick fight this one! And Schilt went through Mighty Mo without much problems. But what I did not expect for the fight to end was in the form of a submission/arm bar win by Schilt.
The Dutchman’s performance and submission adds up to my fight rating.

My Fight Rating: 3 ½ stars out of 5

Kawajiri vs Takeda
What a fight and performance by Kawajiri! The MMA fighter just stormed through Takeda with a flurry of strikes and knees. And Takeda was dropped several times, and with him being bloodied up it seemed time before the ref would stop the fight in favor of Kawajiri.
Just great striking all the way from Kawajiri, and adding the fact that this was a K-1 rules match, it was enjoyable to watch.
Kawajiri’s performance in this fight adds up to fight rating.

My Fight Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Alistair Overeem vs Badr Hari
Ooh man!
Did Overeem just bulldozed Badr Hari?!!
This had a similar sort of performance like Kawajiri did against Takeda, and Badr himself got dropped too, just that compared to Takeda Badr Hari did make some strikes and hit Overeem.
But Overeem was simply the more dominating and might I add the stronger fighter in this fight. Overeem’s performance adds up to the fight rating.
Let’s not forget, this was another of those fight with K-1 rules, thus Overeem got a good victory here.
The question that would emanate from the consequence of this fight is that whether we’ll see Badr Hari got at Overeem in the signed and expected rematch in MMA rules and settings.

Mirko Filipovich vs Hong Man Choi
Being fan of CroCop I am happy that he gets a victory (yes, the CroCop haters or naysayers can just fu-k off).
But on an objective point regarding how the fight was surely it was not great.
I think CroCop came in with a game plan that suits his strengths and skill set, so it was perhaps understandable. Maybe Hong Man Choi might not be in top echelons of MMA’s heavyweights, but his size and power is a tough proposition for any fighter.
Thus the fight was perhaps a boring fight. With CroCop utilizing kicks and straying sway before getting in too close to the Korean and with Hong Man Choi looking like he was not able to impose his power over the Croatian, we are with a not so exciting fight (but I must say also that it is intriguing just to see CroCop going up against the Korean).
I think that when the ref branded to both fighters yellow cards it pictured out the way of the fight.

Musashi vs Gegard Mousasi
The battle of the fighters with names sounding similar to each other.
Only for the Armenian to triumph.
Very good fight and show by Mousasi. I think he clearly dominated over Musashi. His strikes and non-stop punching kind off reminded me of Fedor, and Musashi attempts to hit back and the knees he put on Mousasi as they were exchanging strikes when the Japanese was against the rope was great.
Mousasi’s performance adds up to the fight rating, plus this wa the other K-1 only rules match, so all the more impressive.
And Gegard Mousasi ends the year on a very positive note in his MMA career.

My Fight Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Melvin Manhoef vs Mark Hunt
The quickest fight of the night!!
And the quickest end of a fight in the event!
Should I say Manhoef is back in the MMA scene?
Nonetheless an absolutely fantastic knockout by the Dutchman. And why did Hunt just went in like that?
The knockout and the quick period of this fight makes up for my fight rating.

My Fight Rating: 4 ½ stars out of 5

Eddie Alvarez vs Shinya Aoki
Aoki scored a quick victory and an impressive performance. And a great submission win I must add. The moment Aoki grabbed on Alvarez the American looked as he couldn’t counter the Japanese’s slick grappling prowess. Perhaps made a mistake or got caught in a problematic situation on the ground and Aoki was fast enough to impose his skill and specialty over Alvarez. Nonetheless, as I wrote earlier, and impressive victory by Shinya Aoki.
On another note, one must wonder. This was supposed to be the duel for DREAM’s Lightweight GP back in the middle of the year, one just have to wonder whether this fight could have been the outcome of that supposed fight?
What can be said is evident is that based on this fight, Aoki got the winning hand.

My Fight Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Kazushi Sakuraba vs Tamura
Sakuraba…………
Looking at the way the fight went about, looked as if Saku’s game plan was in the ground fighting. But still, Tamura seemed as if he could wither and negate the grappling game from Sakuraba.
And in the end, Tamura made the more decisive hits, strike and control in getting the victory.
On another note, Sakuraba’s intro before he came on stage was good though. What with him being in hospital and then suddenly his team came up, masks on and everything, and decided to bring back and revitalized Sakuraba. Haha…

My Fight Rating: 3 stars out of 5
