CHAPTER 10: Chinese New Year & Australian Open Final 2006

"It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop." - Confucius

It's Chinese New Year today, and according to the Lunar New Year, this year it's the year of dog. So, just to wish all the Chinese people in Malaysia as well as around the world a happy Chinese new year. For those who are with their families, I hope you enjoy and cherish that family reunion and enjoy all the celebrations made.
I also would like to make a personal good wish to my friend and high-school classmate Nicholas Gan, whom I haven't seen in a long time. Also like to dedicate and good wish to a dr. Sebastian Tong, from Damansara Specialist Hospital, who had helped me before in removing my appendicitis and hernia complications. May success beckons in your careers and all the best in life to you both.
So, once again Happy Chinese New Year people! And have a good celebration with family and friends. And if there are any leftovers of mooncake, please give them to me. I've never tasted mooncake (haha).

The final of the first men's tennis grand slam was being played today. Rod Laver Arena seemed packed to the max, and anticipating a good show. And how could the various people and media not anticipate, the men's final was being contested by two contrasting players, with contrasting achievements and contrasting buildup to the final; Roger Federer vs Marcos Baghdatis. It was a showdown between David and Goliath (Baghdatis being an unseeded player bewildering everybody by reaching the final and eliminating top 10 seeded players from the 4th round like Roddick, Ljubicic, & Nalbandian, and Federer being the undisputed no. 1 and no. 1 seeded tennis player), the FedEx Express againts the Cyprus Cyclone, and the commentators said that the Australian papers labeled the match as the apprentice againts the sorcerer (...). Expecting it to be a memorable final, it was not to be though. The first set was won by Baghdatis 5-7, Federer couldn't seem to break away the Cypriot (at that point, it seemed that we got a good match coming). Second set, Federer took it 7-5, tu pun berhempas pulas. Third set, Federer, 6-0 (wtf). Inevitably, fourth set, Federer won it 6-2 and hence clinched his 7th grand slam title. Since the third set, the Swiss managed to dictate the game and opponent and play his way as he usually does, making Baghdatis ran a lot. In the end, I think Federer's experience, skill and willpower overpowered Baghdatis's play. He might have knocked out the top dogs before the final, but for Baghdatis, I think the task of defeating Federer is too much a mountain to climb, as he never played in a final before and furthermore he's playing againts a great champ (even though he managed to win the first set) in the final.
Still, if there's one thing special that you can take out from this year's Australian open, then it's the emergence of Baghdatis himself. Not only is his style of playing is unpredictable, he's also got a real sense of humour. Always smiling, he looks like he's always looking for a laugh (something like Ronaldinho). Hell, the first thing he said during his speech after the game ended was : "Quiet please" (haha, sial je), not the normal stuff that tennis players usually say like "wow.....incredible......this is a fantastic achievement..........or even thanks to .....for helping me....." . Anyhow, the tennis pundits are now labelling Baghdatis as the next upcoming tennis star. It'll be interesting to see how he'll perform next, since he's no longer a low-profile player after his exploits in the Australian Open. It'll be interesting to see how he plays on the clay courts of Roland Garros come May.

On a final note, congratulations to Roger Federer. It's his seventh grand slam title, remarkably he has now won in all the grand slam finals that he played in (if i'm not mistaken). He was very emotional when giving out his speech and accepting the trophy from Rod Laver. Still, he's a humble and modest man (it's evident from his appearance and persona). Not only is Federer a great tennis player and a great tennis champion, he's a great champion of men and is a great man. A worthy role model for anyone from now till the future.....he's the epitome of achievements & success. Congrats once again.
